You have been picturing it for a couple of summers now. The morning coffee out back. The string lights on. The smell of cedar after the rain. Aloe Decks is a custom deck builder in Barrie, Ontario, and the deck you have been picturing is the kind we build. Family owned. Building decks across Barrie and all of Simcoe County, April through October.
What a deck actually costs in Barrie.
Custom decks in Barrie start as low as $2,500. The six things below move that number more than square footage does, so you can know what you are paying for before you ever read a quote.
-
01 · Material
Material is the biggest single variable.
Pressure-treated lumber is the entry point. Cedar sits about thirty percent above that. Composite decking sits roughly fifty percent above cedar and comes with a 25-year manufacturer warranty.
Each material has its place. We bring real samples to the site visit so you can feel the difference in your own hand before you decide.
-
02 · Railings
Railings cost more per foot than the deck itself.
Aluminum spindle is the entry point. Glass panels are the top tier. Cable rail, wood pickets, and powder-coated steel sit in between. A 400 sq ft deck with glass railing often costs more than a 500 sq ft deck with aluminum.
Glass railing over a real view is unforgettable. Aluminum is a quiet workhorse. We price two options on every quote.
-
03 · Height
Every step off the ground shapes the build.
A deck at grade is the simplest. Two steps up costs slightly more. A second-storey walkout deck calls for engineered beams, larger posts, and code-compliant guards. Multi-level decks add another layer of design and labour.
If your existing deck is high off the ground, ask us about redesigning it lower. A simpler shape often gives you more usable space for less.
-
04 · Stairs
Stairs are priced per tread, not as a lump sum.
Each step has a tread, riser, stringer, and its own railing. A grand staircase with twelve steps and a landing can cost as much as a small deck.
A wraparound staircase looks dramatic. A single short staircase costs about a third as much and usually fits how a family actually uses the yard.
-
05 · Site
Site conditions usually add ten to twenty-five percent.
A flat backyard with truck access from the driveway is ideal. A sloped yard, buried rocks, no vehicle access, or tearing out an old deck adds time and labour.
We photograph the conditions on the site visit and price every one of them on the quote, up front, before you sign anything.
-
06 · Finishes
Finishing details can double the price of a basic deck.
Built-in benches. Planters. Privacy screens. Under-deck storage. Post-cap lighting. Stair lights. Each one adds character and cost.
Our advice: pick the two that matter most to you. A deck with two well-chosen details feels finished. Five feels cluttered.

What makes a deck builder in Barrie worth hiring.
Four things you will see in writing on every quote, before you sign anything. These are the standards we hold ourselves to on every deck we build.
-
The same crew quotes and builds
The person who walks your yard with you on day one is the same person framing your deck on day five. Your quote comes from the crew that will build it. The same faces, from first call to final walkthrough. That is how trust gets built. That is how we earn our next review.
-
Every material is named in writing
Composite brand. Lumber grade. Fastener system. Railing manufacturer. Stain colour. All of it, line by line, on the quote you receive. Every detail is named in plain English. If we wrote it on the quote, that is what shows up at the build site.
-
The price on your quote is the price you pay
Every line on your quote is locked in before we start. If something genuinely shifts during the build, you see the new price in writing and approve it before we lift a hammer. The number you signed is the number you pay.

How much does a deck cost in Barrie?
Custom decks in Barrie start as low as $2,500. The six things in the section above (material, railings, height, stairs, site, finishes) move that number more than square footage does. After we walk your yard, you receive an itemized quote with every line named in writing. Tell us roughly what you are picturing on the call and we can give you a ballpark in about five minutes. Once we have seen the site, the number on the quote is the number you pay.
Do I need a permit to build a deck in Barrie?
Yes, almost always. The City of Barrie requires a permit for any deck more than 60 cm (about two feet) above grade. Even ground-level decks attached to your house usually need one. We handle the entire permit application as part of every build, including structural drawings, site plan, and inspection scheduling. You sign the application and we take it from there. For the official rules, see the City of Barrie building permit page.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Aloe Decks is fully licensed and insured, WSIB compliant, and covered by liability insurance on every site in Barrie and across Simcoe County. We carry the paperwork in the truck and are happy to share it on request, or include it with your quote.
How long does a deck take to build?
Most decks take five to ten working days on site, depending on size, height, and railing system. A simple pressure-treated deck might take three days. A multi-level composite deck with glass railings can take two weeks. From the time you sign the quote, expect three to six weeks before we break ground. That covers the permit timeline, the material order, and our build schedule.
When can you start?
We build April through October. Spots fill up fast as the season progresses, so the earlier you reach out, the more flexibility you have on your start date. We accept deposits year-round, including the off-season, to lock in a build slot for when the season opens.
What if I am not sure what I want yet?
That is most of our first calls. You do not need to know the answers yet. You just need to know how you want to use the space. Tell us that, and we bring options to the site visit: material samples, railing styles, two or three layout suggestions. The quote is free and there is no obligation if you decide to wait.
What is the best deck material for Ontario winters?
All three materials we work with (pressure-treated, cedar, and composite) handle Barrie winters beautifully when installed correctly. Composite decking offers the lowest maintenance and the longest manufacturer warranty (25 years). Cedar greys naturally and has a warm, classic feel that many homeowners prefer. Pressure-treated is the most affordable option and lasts decades when stained or sealed every two to three years. We bring real samples to the site visit so you can see and feel all three before deciding.
What is the difference between cedar and composite?
Cedar is real wood. Beautiful, warm underfoot, naturally rot-resistant. It develops a soft silver patina over time, or holds a rich brown colour with a stain every two to three years. Composite decking is a wood-plastic blend. Looks like wood, holds its colour, needs only the occasional rinse. Cedar costs roughly thirty percent less up front. Composite carries the longest manufacturer warranty and zero ongoing maintenance.
Do you handle the permit paperwork?
Yes, the full package. We prepare the application, the structural drawings, and the site plan. We submit to the City of Barrie building department, follow up with the plans examiner on any revisions, and schedule both the footing inspection and the final inspection. You sign the application. We take it from there.
What is your warranty?
Our workmanship warranty is five years on every build. That covers fasteners, framing, board attachment, and railing. Material warranties pass through directly from the manufacturer, including the 25-year warranty on composite decking. You receive all the warranty paperwork at the final walkthrough.
Can you replace the boards on my existing deck?
Often, yes. If your existing framing (joists, beams, posts, ledger board) is structurally sound, we can replace the surface, hardware, and railing for about half the cost of a full rebuild. We assess this on the site visit and walk you through your options. About sixty percent of the repair quotes we write in Barrie end up as board-replacement jobs.
Do you build decks designed for hot tubs?
Yes. A full hot tub weighs four to six thousand pounds, so the deck underneath has to be engineered for that load. Engineered beams, additional posts, reinforced footings. We have built plenty of these across Barrie. Bring the hot tub spec sheet to the site visit and we will design for it from day one.
